Classic Game Room HD reviews the Sega Saturn Model 2 controller for the Sega Saturn video game console. Yes, there's a model 1 and a model 2 controller. Evidently the model 1 (which is larger) was made specifically for us "big boned", overweight Americans (but we have a great personality!). The model 2 controller was the original Japanese controller for the more compact citizens of Japan. At some point in mid-1996 (I think) they started shipping a slightly refined Sega Saturn with the Model 2 controller which is quite different from the Model 1, both in terms of size and D-pad and button layout. CGR prefers the model 2's D-pad but the Model 1's size. The Model 2 is awesome for SHMUP style shooting games like Darius Gaiden and Radiant Silvergun. It also performs very well for fighters like Virtua Fighter. So here it is, the model 2 controller for the awesome Sega Saturn game system. Classic Game Room is hype and reviews the best in new and old video games and equipment, joysticks, controllers and other nonsense for modern and retro gamers.

Until the age of ten, we had a Commodore 64. My memories of this machine are few and fragmentary. It operated on an insanely intricate machine language from which, at the most, I could wrestle out playing a few games. In 1993, it was put in our crawl space under the stairs. Fifteen years later, while renovating the crawl space, we dug out the old desktop. I setup the Commodore on Halloween night, complete with three joysticks, a grumbling disk drive, and enough floppies to build a house of cards. Not too far away one of my brothers friends sat twiddling his thumbs on a cell phone doubling as a computer, 1/100th the size and probably capable of running circles around the old box unit 1000 times over. This might be the last I will know of the old Commodore before it gets recycled. But what a thrill it was go back and see how far we have come. For somebody who's used to beat SMB in ~5 minutes with regular NES controllers, this game is HARD. Slight variations in levels, crippled warp zones and arcade joysticks really throw off my Mario sense. I struggled to get to World 8, and when I finally got there, I decided to record it for everyone to see :-P.

In a nutshell... I got a working JAMMA Arcade machine, stripped it out but retained the original Arcade monitor, the controls and the coin mech/door. Built a PC on a peice of MDF that runs MAME through the HyperSpin FrontEnd, and plonked it in the bottom of the cabinet. Added a 2.1 speaker / subwoofer system, new T-Molding, 3 more arcade buttons per player, 2 configuration buttons, new marquee with light, new glass bezel, replaced Joysticks and interfaced the PC to the Monitor, Coin door and Controls with the Arcade-VGA GPU and a J-PAC. ... oh and repainted from top to toe. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time is a video game produced by Konami. This is a model prosthetic arm made entirely of Lego. -hand movements and wrist abduction/adduction are Lego pneumatics -wrist pronation/supination, wrist flexion/extension, and elbow flexion/extension are Lego motors (Power Functions) The main purpose of this project was to accurately mimic the full range of motion of a normal human arm and hand. The secondary goal was to maximize speed and power, yet maintain a consistent ratio between the two for demonstration purposes. It is important to note that it was designed as an above elbow prosthesis, and the yellow shoulder is only meant to act as a static model. The amount of weight it can lift is limited to the shape of the object and orientation of the wrist and elbow, but it can't do much with more than a couple pounds. The controller is a rudimentary cluster of switches and joysticks. A 4-motor air compressor with pressure-regulation was made of Lego, but for the demonstration I simply used hand pumps. The Uzebox is a homebrew game console based on an Atmel AVR microcontroller. The design goal was to be simple to assemble for any hobbyist and have great sound and graphics with absolute minimum hardware: an AtMega644 microcontroller, an AD725 RGB-to-NTSC converter...and a bunch of resistors! You get 256 simultaneous colors, 240x224 (40x28 tiles) graphics, a 4 channels sound engine with MIDI driver, NES joysticks ports and a MIDI IN input to compose your own songs straight on the console. The kernel is fully interrupt driven to generates video sync, mix music, read joypads, etc. so games can be written in plain C, no insane cycle counting required :D ! Considering this is an 8-bit general purpose microcontroller with only 4K of RAM and 64k of ROM (and no external RAM or frame buffer), it was quite a challenge to cram all that stuff in there. The site has the schematic and all code is open source. The hardware well...is open hardware! Have a look at the forums for updates (fully assembled Uzebox soon available in well know web shops!). This is my latest (and greatest) invention. It is a very sophisticated MIDI controller, allowing the player to articulate many parts of the sound - filters, envelopes.effects etc simultaneously using your left hand and feet. The right hand plays a keyboard with my patented 'Vibe Bar' for imparting vibrato & pitch bend. I think it's going to be the future of the synthesiser controller! It consists of 36 wheels and 2 joysticks.......with a pedalboard - 2 peddles and 4 switches..very playable, very cool. The MIDI circuit is Livid Instruments MIDI Brain. I like to think of a synthesiser more like an acoustic instrument - rather than an instrument containing 1000 different sounds, you have 1 sound with 1000 articulate-able variations. This is a Purdue ECE 362 project called Super Smash Brothers: Bitbang created by David Kauer, Thor Smith, Vipul Bhat, and Kyle Brown. The project uses a 9S12C microcontroller with a few PLDs to handle the vSync and hSync VGA timing. The RGB pixels are pushed from the port pins of the micro, which are pulled from on-board SRAM. This is the LEPMIS Playstation 3 Switch Access Pod. This video shows some of the ways you can use this interface to allow a disabled person or persons to access the SONY Playstation3 console with just switches or a combination of switches and resistors etc. (although for the latter you would need a "techy" to set it up for you). Using this device a disabled person can access all 17 switch functions and both analogue joystick functions of the Playstation 3 handset. The switch access pod uses a circuit board taken from a genuine SONY PS3 handset, this guarantees 100% compatibility with other genuine SONY hardware and software products. The switch access pod does not contain an internal battery and so needs to be plugged into the USB port of the PS3 console. This is exactly the same procedure as would be used to charge a normal handset, and for initial handset configuration. For added convenience to the person setting up the game, the System buttons have been implemented as discrete switches. Start and select are on the back of the unit. The PS button is placed prominently on the top of the unit, and glows with a soft blue light to show that the unit is powered up. In all respects these system buttons work in exactly the same way as the do on an ordinary PS3 handset. The electrical connections to the SONY circuit board are achieved using impedance matching techniques and are optically isolated from the rest of the Switch Access Pod electronics and the client side circuits. Not satisfied with simply controlling 120 pound robots with a Microsoft Surface, one of the lead programmers from this video ( youtube.com and youtube.com ) took a week off and hacked together an amazing on-screen joystick driver for Windows and the Microsoft Surface. Eric McCann's adaptation of the DREAM Controller is based on Mark Micire's PhD research www.cs.uml.edu and can provide all of the functionality of a physical joystick through multi-touch interaction. By simply placing five fingers on the table, the joystick is dynamically re-sized and oriented to the user's hands automatically on every hand placement. It can also be moved to any position of the screen by dragging the index and middle fingers. To demonstrate the functionality, this video shows the Microsoft Flight Simulator and Valve Corporation's Portal controlled exclusively through hand interaction on the tabletop.
